Revel takes Silver and Bronze in the first Kombucha Kup, as they look to expand operations

OJAI, Calif. (April 18, 2022) — Kombucha – once an unknown drink to Americans has quickly become a go-to beverage for those looking for a healthy alternative to sugar packed soda and energy drinks.

The drink is also a favorite of those looking for the natural benefits contained within.

As the drink category has become more popular, the number of commercial brewers has also grown nearly 30 percent year over year. Increased competition has brought a mixed bag of new entries to market. While some are enjoyable, others can leave a bad taste in the mouth – literally.

But one local producer has made it a personal mission to shed the stigma of sour tasting kombucha, and grow interest in the up and coming beverage by brewing the best tasting probiotic beverages on the market, while honoring traditional brewing practices.

The Revel Kombucha Bar has been a fixture in Ojai, California since 2016, promoting and selling Jun Kombucha in their location at 307 E. Matilija St. Ste. C. bringing locals their version of the drink that is commonly referred to as the champagne of kombuchas. They have served their select drinks both in person at their Kombucha Bar and on tap at other select local establishments.

Six years on, customers are quick to attest to Revel’s quality and drinkability both in person and through countless 5-star reviews online. But now the bar has the hardware to prove it, winning the Bronze and Silver awards at the first international Kombucha Kup in March.

“With so many great companies involved in this competition, we are truly honored by the recognition we received,” said Revel founder and owner Adam Gallegos. “We often hear from customers that we changed the way they look at probiotic beverages like kombucha, but we weren’t sure how judges would perceive it. We are very encouraged by the outcome.”

Revel’s Hoppy Valley took Silver, and Pink Moment took Bronze.

“We make Hoppy Valley with grapefruit and Citra hops and use a dry hopping brewing process to extract the beautiful citrus and fruit flavors and aromas from the hops, without the bitterness typically found in beer,” Gallegos said. “As a previous brewer of beer, creating this flavor was a passion project of mine and I love seeing people of all ages enjoying this one in particular.”

But Hoppy Valley was not alone as Revel’s Pink Moment was also awarded the bronze medal in the Jun category.

“Pink Moment” is our most popular flavor at Revel,” Gallegos said. “Brewed with hibiscus, ginger and orange zest, Pink Moment is a refreshing drink that our local Ojai customers have come to love.”

Both drinks are examples of Jun, which is fermented with raw organic honey and organic green tea.

“Unlike standard Kombucha brewed with sugar and black tea, it has a refined, delicate taste that allows the fruits and herbs we add to really come through,” Gallegos said. “But it remains non-alcoholic (less than 0.5 percent alcohol by volume), so Revel can be enjoyed by customers of all ages.”

He said their high-quality product is made using only the best ingredients available.

“We are obsessed with every ingredient,” Gallegos said. “How it tastes. Where it comes from. How it is farmed. All of these things matter when it comes to the finished quality. We also take care to juice, zest and brew by hand to complete the synergy.”

This dedication to quality will continue, he said, as the operation looks to move into the canned beverage market in the near future.

“We can’t wait to be able to offer our award-winning probiotic beverages throughout Southern California as we work toward firing up a canning operation at Revel,” Gallegos said.
