The area now known as Westlake Village was originally inhabited by the Chumash Indians. In the late 1960s, it was developed as a master-planned community named Westlake. To avoid confusion with a Los Angeles neighborhood of the same name, it was later renamed Westlake Village. The city was incorporated in 1981, becoming the 82nd municipality of Los Angeles County. According to the 2020 Census, Westlake Village had a population of approximately 8,500 residents, with a median age of 45.1 years.
